The Melgaço region, on the banks of the Minho River, is the cradle of Alvarinho, the vine variety that has conquered the respect of wine lovers. Six generations of the same family have perfected here, since the 17th century, the refined alchemy of the best of the Verde wines.
In Quinta do Louridal, the place where Poema comes from, the vineyards in amphitheatre framed by the mountains create roots in the granite soils and are caressed by the soft breeze of the river. The transition microclimate, Atlantic to Continental; warm and dry summers; cold nights; wet and harsh winters give the freshness and elegance that turns this wine into a legendary one.
Before being a registered brand, Poema has embellished religious ceremonies, friends’ dinner parties and family celebrations for countless years. It is a calm Alvarinho, elaborated only with vineyards from the Estate, that ages for 24 months on fine lees and several months in the bottle to acquire complexity and elegance.
Citrus colored with greenish reflections, it displays subtle hints of white flowers, lychee and exotic fruit with a touch of minerality. With great complexity it reveals great freshness in the mouth involved by a sensation of volume and balanced acidity with a long and very elegant aftertaste.
João Paulo Martins, in his famous guide Vinhos de Portugal, gives it a rare punctuation of 17. Praising the richness of the fruit, the quality of both the aroma and structure, defines it as a “good bet”, capable of enduring the cellar.
Since 2000, when it was baptized, Poema is recognized by a selected international audience. In 2009 was included in the Sarah Achmed’s list - 50 Grandes Vinhos Portugueses. Nowadays we can find it in some of the best restaurants that have earned the Michelin guides’ distinctions: Aldea, owned by Jorge Mendes in New York; Fortaleza do Guincho owned by Miguel Vieira and Belcanto owned by José Avilez.
Emerging from the wonderful landscapes from the most Northern place of Portugal, contaminated by the richness of the fauna and flora of Gerês, Poema celebrates all the inspiration from nature and the knowledge of the generations that have conceived it since the 17th century, defying eternity.
